From George Rouy's landmark debut solo exhibition at Hauser & Wirth, "The Bleed, Part I" (London, October–December 2024). This monumental canvas exemplifies Rouy's exploration of the relationship between figure and void — what he calls "the bleed." Working in a purely monochrome palette for the first time, Rouy combines silver pigment and black charcoal to create what he terms "phantom paintings" — figures that exist at the boundary between presence and absence, their forms dissolving into the surrounding space. The large-scale format (nearly 9 feet tall) amplifies the physical impact of the work, inviting viewers into an immersive confrontation with Rouy's signature melting, overlapping bodies. Frequently compared to Francis Bacon for his distortion of the human form, Rouy brings a distinctly digital-age sensibility to figuration — bodies as they feel in the age of screens, not as they appear.
