QuantumScape is the principal United States entrant in the solid-state battery race and the clearest Western counterpoint to the Chinese (CATL/BYD) and Japanese (Toyota) programs. It develops anode-free lithium-metal cells with a proprietary ceramic separator, and pursues a capital-light process-licensing model — proving manufacturing on a pilot line so that OEM/licensing partners build gigawatt-hour fabs, rather than building volume capacity itself. QuantumScape was explicitly flagged as a Knowledge Gap in the prior KB compilation; this page closes it.
Technology
- Architecture: Anode-free (lithium-metal anode formed in situ on first charge) with a ceramic solid separator — no manufactured anode means higher energy density and lower bill-of-materials, at the cost of tighter manufacturing tolerances.
- QSE-5 cell: 844 Wh/L volumetric energy density; 10→80% fast charge in ~12.2 minutes; 10C continuous discharge capability.
- Cobra separator process: the company's core manufacturing IP — ~25× faster heat-treatment speed than the prior-generation Raptor process, in a fraction of the floor space. Cobra entered baseline production June 2025; B1 sample cells began shipping Q3 2025.
Eagle Line (Pilot Production)
- Inaugurated February 4, 2026 in San Jose, California, attended by automotive OEM customers, ecosystem partners, and government officials.
- A "suite of equipment, materials and highly automated processes" built around the Cobra process — the blueprint for production of QS technology.
- Purpose: produce cells for customer sampling/testing and technology demonstrations, and demonstrate scalable production to enable licensing partners to manufacture at gigawatt-hour scale.
Commercial Strategy & Partnerships
- Licensing model — structurally opposite to BYD's vertical integration and Toyota's materials-partnership route. The Cobra process is the asset; partners carry the capital burden of GWh-scale fabs.
- Honda joint development (June 18, 2026) — multi-year joint research and manufacturing agreement for solid-state batteries across EVs, motorcycles, power equipment, and energy storage. QS shares rose ~12% on the announcement. (Honda separately began its own SSB pilot at its Sakura plant in January 2025.)
- Long-standing relationship with Volkswagen / PowerCo as a foundational licensing partner.
