Northrop Grumman (SpaceLogistics)
Type: Company (Satellite Servicing / Life Extension)
Northrop Grumman, through its SpaceLogistics subsidiary, is the incumbent in GEO satellite life extension and — in 2026 — the operator of the first US robotic in-space servicer. Its Mission Extension Vehicle (MEV) line already demonstrated docking-and-pushing life extension; the new Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV) adds dexterous robotic manipulation, moving the company from passive life extension into active servicing and repair.
Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV) — DARPA RSGS
- The flight vehicle for DARPA's Robotic Servicing of Geosynchronous Satellites (RSGS) program — DARPA's robotic payload (two highly dexterous arms built by the US Naval Research Laboratory) mated to a SpaceLogistics MEV-derived bus.
- Launch: dedicated SpaceX Falcon 9, summer 2026 (Northrop purchased the entire rocket); co-manifested with three Mission Extension Pods (MEPs).
- Capabilities: inspecting anomalies, assisting orbital adjustments, correcting mechanical problems, installing new payloads; future services include in-orbit inspection, repair, assembly, relocation, and debris removal.
- Transit & demo: ~10-month electric-propulsion climb to GEO (36,000 km); RSGS demonstration begins ~1 year after launch.
- MRV design life: more than 10 years.
Mission Extension Pods (MEPs)
- "Jet packs" that attach to client satellites; extend the life of an average 2,000 kg GEO satellite for 6–8 years.
Other Programs
- Elixir refueling demo (2028) — docks with the Space Force Tetra-6 satellite in GEO as part of the DoD's refueling demonstration line. (Space Force Refueling Demos)
Key Contributions
