Paradromics is the third credible US program in the invasive-BCI clinical race, staking the maximum-bandwidth, speech-first corner of the design space. Its Connexus device is a fully-implantable intracortical BCI built around a 421-microelectrode array — electrodes thinner than a human hair, each capturing signals from individual neurons. Signals travel to a transceiver implanted in the chest, which transmits wirelessly through the skin (transcutaneous) to an external receiver running AI decoding. Paradromics reports >200 bits per second of information transfer in preclinical models — by their measure roughly 20× the Neuralink N1 and orders of magnitude beyond Synchron's endovascular Stentrode.
Where Neuralink scales patient numbers across multiple applications and Synchron races to the first FDA filing on lowest surgical risk, Paradromics' thesis is raw neural bandwidth in service of fluent communication. The bet: that restoring natural-speed, open-vocabulary speech for people who have lost it requires more channels and higher throughput than lower-bandwidth approaches can deliver.
Clinical Status — First-in-Human (2026)
- FDA Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) granted November 20, 2025 — the first IDE approval for speech restoration with a fully implantable BCI.
- First-in-human implant: June 17, 2026, at University of Michigan Health — neurosurgeons Matthew Willsey, M.D., Ph.D. and Aditya S. Pandey, M.D. — in a woman with motor neuron disease.
- Trial: Connect-One Early Feasibility Study (EFS) — initially two participants with impaired speech and limited extremity movement; tracked for six years for long-term safety and whether the BCI can restore communication via synthesized text and speech and enable computer control.
