The EIA's September 2026 Short-Term Energy Outlook forecasts US electricity generation of 4,368 billion kilowatthours (BkWh) in 2026, up 2.2%, with a further 1.7% growth in 2027. Retail sales are forecast at 4,135 BkWh in 2026 (up nearly 2% on 2025) and 4,211 BkWh in 2027 (up 2%).

The line that matters

"despite a pause in new data center projects in Texas, the West South Central region remains the largest regional contributor to electricity sales growth"

Growth is concentrated in West South Central, attributed to data centre development and commercial/industrial manufacturing expansion — and the EIA says so while explicitly acknowledging the Texas pause. That is ERCOT's M-A080326-01 (ingested alongside, ercot-batch-zero-timeline-pause-2026.md) surfacing in a federal national forecast five weeks later. The pause has not been forecast away; it has been absorbed and the region still leads.

Why it is on this rung

This is the demand-side denominator for the power calls: a federal, monthly, fixed-methodology series that gets revised, which makes it durable in a way a one-off analyst estimate is not. It bounds how much headroom the buildout has against total US generation. It is a forecast where ERCOT is a fact — pair them.

Limitations — and one is a hard rule

  • The press release gives BkWh, not GW of data-centre load. Any GW figure must come from the STEO tables, not from this page. Do not derive one by arithmetic here.
  • No data-centre share of demand is disclosed in the release — the attribution is qualitative ("driven by data center development"), region-level, and bundled with manufacturing.
  • It is a forecast, subject to monthly revision. Cite the vintage (September 2026 STEO) every time.
  • Fuel-mix percentages are shares of generation, not capacity, and the price assumptions are inputs to the outlook rather than findings.
  • 2.2% total US generation growth is modest against the AI-buildout narrative. The interesting claim is the regional concentration, not the national total, and reporting the national number alone would understate the local constraint.
