A watching call is a claim about the WAITING, so it fails in two directions. It stops being true if the cash catches up while we wait: two consecutive quarters in which operating cash flow is at least half of non-GAAP net income and inventory grows more slowly than revenue would mean the ramp was real and the hesitation cost a move. It stops being true in the other direction if demand breaks: two consecutive quarters of lower Datacenter & Communications revenue would leave nothing to wait for.

The claim

Watching, not buying: datacom demand is real, but a year of profit produced almost no cash while inventory rose 80%.

Coherent: the demand is real, the cash has not arrived

Key Points

  • FY26 revenue $7.12B (+22.5%); datacom +59% in Q4, above the top of guidance twice running.
  • FY26 operating cash flow $79.5M against $805M of net income; inventory +80% to $2.58B.
  • One unnamed customer was 20% of FY26 revenue (10% a year earlier); average shares +26%.
  • The call waits on one test: cash catching up with profit.

Coherent sells the lasers and optical transceivers that carry AI traffic between machines, and the demand is not in doubt. Fiscal 2026 revenue was $7.12B, up 22.5%; Datacenter & Communications was $5.27B, up 40%, and datacom grew 59% in the June quarter, beating the top of its guided range for the second quarter running. Management says indium-phosphide laser supply is the only bottleneck and expects its own output to double. The question is not demand. It is cash. Over the same fiscal year Coherent earned $805M of net income and generated $79.5M of operating cash flow. Inventory rose 80% to $2.58B; payables rose $1.06B, which can reverse; capex was $1.10B; and purchase commitments stand at $11.8B. One customer, unnamed in the 10-K, was 20% of revenue, up from 10% a year earlier, and the average share count rose 26%. A business converting demand into profit but not into cash is either building ahead of a ramp that is about to pay, or building inventory against a peak. The filings do not yet say which. We are WATCHING, not buying. This call is a claim about the waiting: the cash test comes first. If operating cash flow turns clearly positive while inventory grows more slowly than revenue, the ramp is real and the hesitation will have cost something. If the cash does not come, the demand was being financed rather than earned. WATCHING, conviction MEDIUM, one year. This view was formed by MenFem's research process at Connor's request and adopted by him.

Bull Case

Inventory and capex were built ahead of a ramp that is about to pay: cash flow turns sharply positive, the InP doubling lands, and the $3B-a-quarter ambition becomes guidance.

Bear Case

What I'd have to believe for the other side: the cash gap is just timing. A business growing datacom at 59% has to build inventory and pay for capacity before revenue arrives, the commitments are to customers who have already ordered, and waiting for the cash to show is waiting for the moment everyone else can see it too.

Catalysts

Fiscal Q1 2027 resultsEarnings

Revenue against $2.2–2.4B, the 10-Q cash-flow statement, inventory days and the top customer's share.

Indium-phosphide outputOther

Whether internal InP laser output doubles as guided.

Risk factors

Inventory against a peakHigh

If the inventory build was ahead of a demand peak, write-downs and a margin squeeze follow.

Customer concentrationMedium

One customer at 20% of revenue can change the year with one order.

DilutionMedium

The average share count rose 26% in fiscal 2026.
