Orbit Fab + Astroscale: GEO Satellite Refueling
Abstract
Orbit Fab and Astroscale plan to launch a satellite refueling system in geostationary orbit in June 2026, marking the first commercial on-orbit refueling capability at GEO.
Key Contributions
- First satellite refueling system deployed to geostationary orbit
- Enables life extension of GEO satellites worth hundreds of millions each
- SpaceX simultaneously planning orbital fuel transfer between two Starships in 2026
- Boeing embracing additive manufacturing for satellite production — printed circuits replacing 6-9 month integration phases

On-orbit servicing is transitioning from demonstration to commercial reality. Orbit Fab has developed a standardized refueling interface, and Astroscale provides the servicing spacecraft. GEO refueling could fundamentally change the economics of communications and defense satellites.
SpaceX's Starship-to-Starship propellant transfer, if successful, enables deep space missions including Mars by solving the fuel depot problem.
