The Authors Guild wrote the rung's first source: a guide for authors to the Bartz v. Anthropic settlement, published 25 September 2025. It sets out the fund ($1.5bn), the approximate number of qualifying titles (500,000), the minimum payment per title ($3,000 before fees and costs), the eligibility rules, and the dates — claims by 30 March 2026, final-approval hearing 14 May 2026 (Authors Guild).

It is also where this KB gets the careful reading of the fair-use ruling: that, as decided, the holding applies to the three named plaintiffs rather than the class, so it is not a general licence to train.

Why the source is graded as it is

The Guild is an advocacy organisation on the authors' side of this dispute — party-adjacent, not the court. Its summary of the settlement's terms is useful and specific, and the operative document is still the settlement agreement on the docket, which this KB has not read. Claims resting only on the Guild's interpretation are graded weak; its reporting of the published terms is graded moderate.
