What would prove this wrong · verbatim, as published

The reason for holding this stops being true if the growth fades: AWS revenue growth below 30% year on year in any quarter. It also stops being true if the profit engine weakens: AWS operating margin below 30% for two consecutive quarters. And it stops being true if the circle breaks: Amazon recording a loss of more than $25B in a single quarter on its Anthropic or OpenAI holdings, in earnings or other comprehensive income.

The claim

AWS grew 39% with a $578B backlog and is guided above 40% for two more years. Bullish, at medium conviction: free cash flow is deep in the red and Anthropic is both a customer and a ~$239B holding.

Amazon: AWS is accelerating, and it is lending to its biggest customers

Key Points

  • Q3 2026: AWS $46.0B (+39%), operating margin ~39%; backlog $578B.
  • Jassy: AWS growth projected above 40% in 2027 and 2028.
  • Q3 capex $77.3B; 2026 cash capex ~$220B; trailing free cash flow −$42.4B.
  • Anthropic carried at ~$146.2B (notes) + ~$92.5B (preferred); up to $20B financing facility.

AWS is growing faster than it has in about five years and it earns most of Amazon's profit. In the quarter to September 2026 AWS revenue was $46.0B, up 39%, at an operating margin of about 39%, and the backlog of contracted revenue reached $578B, up from $496B a quarter earlier. Andy Jassy says AWS growth is projected above 40% in both 2027 and 2028, and the release names new agreements with Meta, NVIDIA, OpenAI, Salesforce and Oracle. Group operating income was $28.1B, and Q4 is guided to $28.5–33.5B. Conviction is MEDIUM for two reasons. The build is being paid for with debt: purchases of property and equipment were $77.3B in the quarter, 2026 cash capex is about $220B, trailing free cash flow was an outflow of $42.4B, and long-term debt rose to about $181B from $69B at the start of the year. And the demand is partly circular: at 30 September Amazon carried its Anthropic convertible notes at about $146.2B and its Anthropic preferred stock at about $92.5B, has made up to $20B of financing available to Anthropic, and has invested in OpenAI, both of which are large AWS customers. Amazon's nuclear supply agreement with Vistra at Comanche Peak links to MenFem's Vistra call. BULLISH, conviction MEDIUM, three years. This view was formed by MenFem's research process at Connor's request and adopted by him. The entry is the live US quote on 6 November 2026.

Bull Case

AWS holds above 40% as the backlog converts, Trainium lowers the cost of serving it, and capex peaks in 2027 while the cash returns.

Bear Case

What I'd have to believe for the other side: Amazon is funding the demand it books. Its largest AI customers are companies it has invested in and lends to, the build runs on debt, and a fall in Anthropic's value would show up in both the backlog and the balance sheet at once.

Ads revenue up 26% with 15% fewer staff funds the largest owned-compute build in tech. Bullish, at low conviction: free cash flow went negative and the money now comes from the capital markets.

Capex incl. leases $34.9B; free cash flow −$2.1B; 2026 capex guide $135–145B.
