Rung 13 Inference & Token-Pricing EconomicsSwitch rungClose
Intercom (Fin)
productintercomfinoutcome-pricingtask-pricingcustomer-support-agents
Type: Product — Intercom's AI customer-support and sales agent, tracked here for its price only.
Fin is on this rung for one reason: it is sold by the finished job, not by the token. It is the rung's first published price per task, and the clearest example of the whole token-to-task chain being packaged into one number by the seller.
Key Contributions (to this topic)
- $0.99 per outcome, once per conversation, however many actions Fin takes — "You're only charged for one outcome per conversation, even if Fin takes multiple actions." An outcome is a resolution (the customer confirms, or leaves without asking for more help after Fin's answer), a completed handoff procedure, a sales disqualification or a self-serve routing, all $0.99; a sales qualification is $9.99. Evidence: strong for the price as published (Intercom help article and pricing page, read 2026-09-24); the definition of "done" is Intercom's own (Intercom)
- The token count is invisible to the buyer. Model choice, tokens and retries are Intercom's cost; the buyer's price does not move when token prices fall. Every token-side cut on this rung (OpenAI's July cuts, Anthropic's cheaper cache reads) widens Intercom's margin rather than lowering the price. Evidence: reasoning from the published price structure; Intercom discloses no cost figures
- The price follows value, not cost. A qualification is priced at ten times a support answer, with nothing to suggest it takes ten times the tokens. Evidence: strong for the prices; the inference is ours
- "Resolved" includes "left without asking again." An assumed resolution is billed; a customer who returns to the same conversation later is refunded. Evidence: strong (Intercom's own definitions)
Blind spots, stated: chat and email only (voice and high-volume pricing are "contact Sales"); no cost or token figure is disclosed, so Intercom's margin per outcome cannot be computed; the page is a help article that can change without notice, with no archived copy — cite it as "as of 2026-09-24".
Mentioned In
- Cost Per Task (Cost-of-Pass) — Fin is the rung's first published task price, set against its measured ones.
Related Entities
- OpenAI (pricing) and Anthropic (economics) — the token-side sellers whose price moves sit underneath a task price like this one.
Changelog
- 2026-09-24 — Created on ingest of Intercom's Fin outcome-pricing pages (re-proposed to this rung
2026-09-05 after its first rung,
applications, was deleted). Records that Intercom now prices per outcome, not per resolution as the proposal said.
